2022 Bourne Lab news

Happy Holidays!!

The structural biology groups held their annual potluck (started before our times by the groups of Paul Cook and Ann West).  Fun and good food makes for a nice end to the semester.

Attended by rockstars from the Singh, Rajan, Bourne, and West labs, plus core facility directors and admins.

Fun ending to the semester with a lab outing – bowling!
Really impressed with the skills in this group
–> inside the alley, and outside.  😉

Abbygail, Jeff, Yanting, Shengfeng, Dr B, Kevin, Sam, and Kole

Echos from the past this week as former lab rock star Amy Tan presented at the OUHSC College of Medicine.
She delivered a review and update for our project targeting the folate enzyme DHNA – stay tuned for a pending publication!

A few members of the lab attended the annual Great Plains Infectious Disease conference in Columbia, MO, to hear fascinating science and share some of our work with the community.

Both Shengfeng and Jeff presented posters, and Jeff was selected for a 5 min flash talk (and he did great!).  We caught up with friends in the Lutter and Patrauchan labs, and new colleagues from OU!

Congratulations to Felipe on his UROP fellowship!

He has been awarded an Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program fellowship to help support his work on the Pseudomonal ParDE TA system. This is a competitive program and we are very proud of Felipe’s hard work!

Welcome to Andy Powell and Kole Long
for “rotation 2” in our PhD program!

Very happy for a return visit to the National Center for CryoEM Access and Training (NCCAT). May have collected some Krios data, may have made some grids on the famous Chameleon, also may have brought a collaborative project for a first screening.

Grateful for COBRE and IDeA state support to push the learning process forward!

And NYC is beautiful in the fall …..

Dr. Bourne delivered an invited seminar at Kansas State University, ably hosted by the great Dr. Brian Geisbrecht.  Stimulating discussions, great advice, and met potential new collaborators!

Dr. Bourne delivered an invited seminar to collaborators at OSU
It was nice to visit my previous home and its continual sea of orange, and I appreciate the invigorating discussions about science and everything else!

Welcome rotation students to the Bourne lab!
Looking forward to seven weeks + of interactions    🙂

Deepti Bhusal and Walter Galie

Dr. Bourne attended the American Crystallographic Association meeting in Portland, OR
It was fantastic to be at an in-person meeting, and I wish there was more time to explore this great city!

I was honored to have our abstract selected for an oral presentation – thank you very much to the session chair, Dr. David Rose!

Kevin Snead presenting his work on interruption of a ParDE interface

Jeff Tu presenting his work on using AlphaFold to model protein-protein interfaces

Christina even had a quick presentation on how impactful the CoBRE program has been on the development of our TA systems research program

Congratulations to Michelle Holt for earning her Masters of Science degree.  Graduation is always so bittersweet – wishing you all the best in the “real” world!  🙂

Dr. B is at one month of embedded training at the National Center for CryoEM Access and Training (NCCAT) ~ stay tuned for more!
This place is AMAZING!

OU Undergraduate Research Day, April 2022 was a fantastic success, with presentations by Lydia Burger and Felipe Ferreira and many other talented OU undergrads.

Lydia Burger, Felipe Ferreira, Christina Bourne

The best result – Felipe took First Place in the Natural Sciences division!  He is clearly on to a winning strategy!

The Bourne Lab traveled to nearby Stillwater OK for the annual (and in person!) Missouri Valley Branch ASM meeting.

Bourne Lab March 2022: Lydia Burger, Shengfeng Ruan, Jeff Tu, Felipe Ferreira, Michelle Holt, Kevin Snead, Dr. B

We are proud of all five poster presenters (pictured below) and congratulate undergraduate Felipe Ferreira on winning an award for his poster presentation!

The OU COBRE in Structural Biology was featured in a video produced by the Biophysical Society (for use at their national meeting).
See if you can spot us, and enjoy!
